By customer request, we are trying out a new version of Luana with just a little bit (about 10%) of the caffeine removed. We find this makes the morning pickup a little mellower, for our customers who are trying to cut down a little.

LUANA (pronounced loo-ah-nah) means enjoy. The word symbolizes pleasantness, comfort, and enjoyment, feelings evoked by the beautiful Kona region of Hawai‘i. This high-elevation coffee provides rich, beautiful Kona flavor we know you’ll love, regardless of the caffeine content. Itʻs consistently rated one of the best in Kona!

We ship freshly roasted whole beans for optimal flavor and freshness.

Five pound orders may be shipped as one bulk bag or five one pound bags, depending on availability.

Our Natural Decaffeination Process

Our all-natural process involves exposing green coffee beans to carbon dioxide under high pressure. For those of you who enjoy physics, the high pressure causes the CO2 to reach a supercritical state, taking a form between gas and liquid that allows it to penetrate the green beans and dissolve caffeine. The pressure is then reduced, causing the CO2 to return to a gaseous state. The caffeine is removed from the gas with a charcoal filter.

The process itself is fascinating, but its biggest benefit is that the flavor components remain in the bean throughout the process. That means Reduced Caffeine Luana tastes like regular Luana.

Other decaffeination processes typically involve soaking the beans in water – together with natural extracts or chemical solvents – for long periods of time. Altering the moisture content and introducing other substances can result in dramatic changes to the coffee’s flavor and healthfulness.

Our ʻohana of Kona Coffee farmers have put all of their passion and hard work into developing their flavor profiles. It is extremely important to us as roasters (and former growers) to respect the purity of the product and preserve the flavors these farmers have worked hard to cultivate.

ABOUT THE ESTATE

This estate was planted several generations ago on about five acres at 2300 feet in North Kona. It’s hard to count the trees because they were planted in the traditional Japanese “Old Hawaiian Style,” which means there is no organized spacing in between. The trees are allowed to grow tall, making it a challenge to pick, but definitely worth it. This beautiful farm gets rain clouds in the afternoon almost every day for that misty view of the coast.
